SUMMARY:Drafting Table - featured poet session
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Drafting Table\, where we share our emerging poems with each other and provide feedback in a safe and inclusive environment. \nMaybe you have been attending the Getting Started sessions and feel ready to edit your work and develop your ideas. Maybe you’re an experienced but unpublished poet who wants to take those next steps in your poetry career. Just bring a willingness to receive and provide feedback with the whole group! \nOnce a month\, we invite a published poet to join us. There will be a short reading of their poems followed by a workshop where attendees can learn more about the creative process\, get an insight into what it means to be a poet\, and share our work with them. \nJune’s featured poet will be Issabella Orlando. Issabella’s multidisciplinary practice engages cultural research\, creative writing\, experimental & documentary filmmaking\, and facilitation to blend storytelling\, research\, and education with creative practice\, poetic writing\, and moving image. Her work enquires into how the past shapes and remains tethered to our present lives through craft\, memory\, landscape\, grief\, and the supernatural. She regularly curates and facilitates creative workshops\, events\, screenings and retreats in London and beyond. \nIssabella’s workshop will explore the theme of ‘ghosts’\, and involve walking to a nearby graveyard. Here’s what this theme means to her and what you can expect from the workshop: \nGhosts have become a permanent fixture in my artistic work and writing in the past few years. I believe they are among us in many forms – lost loved ones\, places we’ll never go or experience the same way again\, exes\, strangers\, made-up worlds\, alternate lives\, versions of ourselves we’ll never be again or ever become\, memories we hold individually and as a collective. \nIn exploring these phantoms of pasts and futures\, alive and among us just beyond the veil\, I’ve discovered that ghosts make for brilliant muses. What’s more\, I’m still wrapping my head around\, is that grief and creativity are deeply connected. Loss is heart opening\, powerful\, spacious. And creativity needs heart\, power and space for new things to be born. Life\, death\, life again. That old chestnut\, tale as old as time. \nI’m so excited to present a very special event where we’ll explore this ancient cycle through storytelling\, creative writing\, and a gathering in a cemetery near OPL. \nIn the first half of the workshop I’ll share my own retellings of a few myths related to ghosts and the underworld. You’ll also hear a few of my own poems set in the graveyards of Oxford and South East London. Together we’ll reflect on the link between loss and new creation\, in both life and creative practice\, and do some guided writing on these themes. \nIn the second half of the workshop we’ll open the floor to your own creative texts and poems in typical Drafting Table fashion\, and I’d especially welcome pieces or questions that relate somewhat to these themes. You’re welcome to bring work both to share and to be reviewed/fed back on by myself and other attendees. \nFeel free to email any queries to opldraftingtable@gmail.com
