SUMMARY:This Is Just To Say: Spoken word open mic night
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. \nSlots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! Performers entry is free! \nEvery month we feature a performer with an extended set. This month’s featured artist is Orlando. Orlando was force-fed ‘The Lady of Shalott’ by their mother as a child and as such vowed to avoid poetry for the rest of their life. As with their other resolutions\, Orlando failed and finally picked up the mic in the summer of 2017 in a whirlwind of peer pressure and wine. Over the last few years Orlando has featured in the London poetry scene for events such as the Farrago Poetry Slam\, Speak Equal\, and Big Trouble. In 2018\, just 5 months after approaching the stage\, they earned 8th place in Canada’s National Poetry Slam\, and in February of last year they achieved 3rd place in the UK National Poetry Slam\, one-up on the 4th place of the year before. Orlando speaks with passion and ease born of a deep love of words\, captivating and moving audiences in the most exquisitely powerful way: a must-see if you are into the spoken word. \nAll very welcome to just come and listen. This event is non-ticketed\, with entry £5 on the door (£2 concessions/Patreon patrons). \nDoors at 7.30pm (performers advised to arrive a little earlier!) \nNote: there is no bar but the event is BYOB (wine and beer only\, no spirits please!) and this event is 18+

SUMMARY:Getting Started With Poetry: "Home"
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’ve never written a poem before\, have just started to write\, or aren’t sure if what you’re writing is poetry\, this monthly workshop is a chance to carve out some time for writing.In each workshop\, we’ll read a poem together\, and use it as our starting point. We’ll suggest some prompts you could take from the poem\, and ideas you might like to borrow.  There will be plenty of time to write\, and plenty more prompts if you get stuck. At the end of the session\, you’ll be able to share what you’ve written in a supportive environment. \nIn August’s workshop\, we’ll think about ‘home’ – whether it’s a feeling or a place\, fixed or in motion. We’ll find ways to form our tangled relationships with home into clear structures and articulations. \nAll you need to bring is yourself – these workshops are here for you to enjoy writing and build confidence in your voice. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. \nTell us you’ll be coming by booking a ticket here. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com or fill in the contact form below. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWebsite\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ

SUMMARY:A Collaborative Introduction to Translating Poetry
DESCRIPTION:This event is delivered in collaboration with The Burner\, an Oxford art collective. \nThe workshop will serve as an introduction to translating poetry and as a forum to discuss poetry in translation. The workshop will be facilitated by writers with experience in translating poetry\, although the workshop will be by no means an attempt to transmit this experience. \nInstead\, attendees and facilitators will attempt to answer together questions regarding the theory and practice of translation\, while also working together on translating lines of poetry. \nAttendees are more than welcome to draw from this experience and submit to the From Apples to Oranges zine that will be launched at the event Makaris in the Meadow on August 25th. \nNo prior experience in poetry translation is required\, the event is free\, and we’ll provide all the materials needed. But please do let us know you’re coming by booking a ticket at: https://fixr.co/event/workshop-a-collaborative-introduction-to-translati-tickets-462394307 \nThe Community Works is an accessible and inclusive space but if you have specific needs please email us in advance on oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com or via the contact form below. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWebsite\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Makaris at the Meadow: Zine Launch and Multilingual Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This event is delivered in collaboration with The Burner\, an Oxford art collective.\n\n\nMakar\, ‘maker’\, was the Older Scots word for poet\, as immortalised in William Dunbar’s Lament for the Makaris. Makar retains the identity of creative practical activity and art from which our ‘poetry’ stems: the Ancient Greek poieō meant to make and to compose poetry. If poets are makers\, then translators of poetry are doubly-so.\n\n\nMakaris at the Meadow will be the launch of the From Apples to Oranges poetry zine and an evening of multilingual poetry reading. The Burner is seeking submissions consisting of original translations of poetry for both the zine and the reading. No prior experience in poetry translation is required! Submissions are open until the 22nd of August and can be sent to: theburnermag@gmail.com
