SUMMARY:Drafting Table - Featured Poet Session
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Drafting Table\, where we share our emerging poems with each other and provide feedback in a safe and inclusive environment. \nMaybe you have been attending the Getting Started sessions and feel ready to edit your work and develop your ideas. Maybe you’re an experienced but unpublished poet who wants to take those next steps in your poetry career. Just bring a willingness to receive and provide feedback with the whole group! \nOnce a month\, we invite a published poet to join us. There will be a short reading of their poems followed by a workshop where attendees can learn more about the creative process\, get an insight into what it means to be a poet\, and share our work with them. \nThis month’s featured poet is Daniel Sluman. Daniel is a 38-year-old poet and disability rights activist. He co-edited the first major UK Disability poetry anthology Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back\, and he has published three poetry collections with Nine Arches Press. SUMMARY:This Is Just to Say: spoken word open mic
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library presents a spoken word open mic night! Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing\, and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. Slots are 2-3 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served and slots fill up quickly so we recommend arriving in good time for 7pm! \nAt OPL we want everyone to feel comfortable and has space to enjoy the night. That’s why we have a few basic guidelines that we ask everyone to follow: \n\nPlease refrain from using discriminatory language or harmful content in your performance. If you are unsure about your performance\, speak to the host when you arrive.\nYou should aim to read something that’s around one page or two minutes – this ensures that everyone has enough time to read.\n\nThe theme for this month is PACIFIC – as usual\, to be interpreted however you like. Maybe your work is along the peaceful\, tranquil side of things\, or maybe you’re delving to the rawest depths of oceanic inspiration. From the roar of waves to the hush of calm waters\, let your words drift or crash ashore. \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage will be John Gallas! John Gallas is an Aotearoa/NZ poet\, now living in Markfield\, Leics. Published by Carcanet (www.carcanet.co.uk): books include ‘The Extasie’\, ‘The Song Atlas’\, ‘Fresh Air & the Story of Molecule’\, ’52 Euros’\, ‘The Little Sublime Comedy’\, ‘Billy ‘Nibs’ Buckshot: The Complete Works’ (2024) etc.: also Indigo Dreams (’17 Very Pacific Poems’)\, Five Leaves (‘Mad John’s Walk’)\, Cerasus (‘The Gnawing Flood’) and Cold Hub (NZ) (‘Lying with Poets’\, ‘Pacifictions’); Fellow of the English Association\, St Magnus Festival Orkney Poet\, librettist\, translator\, John Clare ‘The Visit’ Poet\, Sutton Hoo Saxonship Company Poet (www.saxonship.org) and…in real life\, biker\, tramper\, and LCFC fox\, with a caravan-hideaway in a corner of Lincolnshire for not writing in. www.johngallaspoetry.co.uk for info\, Poem of the Month\, and news. \nThe session starts at 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive in time for 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free. \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand!

SUMMARY:The Shape of Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Note that these sessions will take place online – links to the Zoom sessions will be circulated to those who have registered in advance of these events.  \nMany of us feel intimidated by formal poetry: Some of us consider it too restrictive and governed by rules\, while others write exclusively in form. This workshop is an invitation to all writers of poetry\, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years\, to explore the creative potential of poetic forms. \nOur monthly sessions happen on the second Saturday of the month from 2pm til 4pm. During each of our workshops\, we will look at the conventions of a particular form such as the sonnet\, ghazal\, or haiku\, read example poems\, and write our own versions. This workshop will be a collaborative space for us to explore how experimenting with limitations or restrictions in our writing can give us whole new ways of expressing ourselves\, and open unexpected doors! Whether you’ve never written a poem before\, have just started to write\, or aren’t sure if what you’re writing is poetry\, this monthly workshop is a chance to carve out some time for writing. \nIn each workshop\, we’ll read a poem together\, and use it as our starting point. We’ll suggest some prompts you could take from the poem\, and ideas you might like to borrow. There will be plenty of time to write\, and plenty more prompts if you get stuck. At the end of the session\, you’ll be able to share what you’ve written in a supportive environment. \nAll you need to bring is yourself – these workshops are here for you to enjoy writing and build confidence in your voice. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. \nTickets are priced at £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more\, £2 for those on lower income) and registration is required. If this cost would be prohibitive to your attending\, please email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com and we can allocate you one of our limited free spots in the workshop.

SUMMARY:The Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:People who never read poetry don’t write poems that are worth reading – Wendy Cope \n  \nIf you’re keen to find a way in to reading and appreciating poetry\, discover new writing\, and open your mind to the world of poetry\, welcome to The Reading Circle. Come to OPL’s poetry reading group where we’ll share and discuss poems written in the 20th and 21st centuries in a relaxed and inclusive peer-led environment. \n  \nQuestions we’ll be asking include: \nWhat makes a poem ‘work’?  \nWhy do we like a poem? Why don’t we?  \nIs there such a thing as a fashionable poem? Does it matter?  \nCan we love a poem we don’t fully understand? What makes mystery different to obscurity?  \nWhat might we learn from other poets that can help us enrich our own craft? \n  \nThe Reading Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month\, 2-4 pm in The Community Works. \nWe suggest a donation to attend each session: £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more) and registration is required here. Donations are optional and shouldn’t be prohibitive to you attending\, but all proceeds go to the running costs of the Oxford Poetry Library and our ability to continue providing these sorts of sessions. \nThis month’s group will be facilitated by the established writers (and prolific readers) Alan Buckley and Vanessa Lampert. \n  \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand.

\nThe theme for this month’s session is CWTCH. A Welsh word with no perfect English translation\, cwtch is more than a cuddle. It’s a safe space\, a moment of warmth\, a shelter from the storm. Whether it’s the arms of a lover\, a memory that holds you\, or a home you carry inside\, bring your words to the mic and share what cwtch means to you. Go on\, give us a hug. \nAt OPL we want everyone to feel comfortable and has space to enjoy the night. That’s why we have a few basic guidelines that we ask everyone to follow: \n\nPlease refrain from using discriminatory language or harmful content in your performance. If you are unsure about your performance\, speak to the host when you arrive.\nYou should aim to read something that’s around one page or two minutes – this ensures that everyone has enough time to read.\n\nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage will be Andy Melhuish. \nAndy H. Melhuish is an Oxford-based writer and disability professional. He returned to writing poetry in 2022 after many years in the cold\, joining OPL as a volunteer and founding the immensely popular Drafting Table workshops. As the poetry community continues to expand\, Andy tries to champion diverse voices and ensure everyone feels empowered to develop and share their work. \nHe’s currently working on his first pamphlet\, based (very) loosely on the Seven Wonders of Wales. Andy’s style intends to bridge the gap between page and performance. With his trademark awkward absurdity he explores topics such as mental health\, sexuality\, neurospiciness\, inherited trauma\, toxic masculinity and shamelessly soppy love. Classic millennial. \nThe session starts at 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU).

\nThis month’s group will be facilitated by the established writers (and prolific readers) Alan Buckley and special guest Andrew Jamison. \n  \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand.

SUMMARY:Alan Buckley book launch: "Still"
DESCRIPTION:On 25 July at 7.30pm in The Community Works\, we’ll celebrate the publication of Still\, the second full poetry collection by Alan Buckley. \nStill has its origins in the third lockdown of January 2021\, when Alan began writing short\, tightly structured poems during – and prompted by – his daily walk from East Oxford’s Marsh Park to the Lye Valley nature reserve. The apparently narrow focus of these poems belies their scope and ambition\, as Still repeatedly shows the reader that “nothing is too mundane / to be transformed.” There’ll also be guest readings from OPL regulars Carl Tomlinson and Zoe Olivia Brown\, and the evening will be hosted by Sophia Blackwell\, who played a big part in Oxford’s spoken word scene back in the noughties. \nTickets are £5 each (£2 concessions) – book here to avoid disappointment! The building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand. Doors will open at 7.00pm. \nStill has already been gathering praise ahead of its publication in July by Blue Diode Press\, an independent poetry publisher based in Edinburgh: \n  \nStill asks the reader to notice the ordinary moments that often contain profound connection – human to human\, human to the natural world\, and that human observing the natural world interacting with itself… I found myself reaching for these poems again and again as a reminder of how to see magic in the ordinary world that I might “otherwise have missed\,” and how often it’s those small encounters that save us “when nothing else / will.” \n– Marjorie Lotfi \n  \nAlan Buckley is one of those secret gems of UK poetry whose work can’t help but grow and grow in stature. His latest book is a truly virtuoso performance – an entire collection written in an entirely new form. These ‘douzaines’ are crammed with incident and insight. They are vital\, enthralling waymarkers on a path we can’t help but follow\, through landscape\, through time\, towards ourselves.  \n– John Glenday \n  \nA little more about the readers: \nSophia Blackwell is the author of five books of poetry\, fiction and non-fiction\, including The Fire-Eater’s Lover and The Other Woman\, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize\, from Burning Eye Books. Her most recent book\, The Poetry Writers’ Handbook\, was published by Bloomsbury in 2022. \nCarl Tomlinson lives on a smallholding in Oxfordshire. His poems have appeared in Orbis\, South\, Spelt\, The High Window\, The Alchemy Spoon and several anthologies. His debut pamphlet\, Changing Places was published in 2021 by Fair Acre Press. \nZoe Olivia Brown is a poet and biologist from The Bahamas\, currently based in Oxford as she pursues her PhD. She writes poetry rooted in her personal experiences\, exploring themes of identity\, place\, human connection\, and the heart. \nAlan Buckley is the author of two pamphlets (Shiver and The Long Haul)\, and the full collections Touched (HappenStance 2020)\, and Still (Blue Diode Press 2025). His poems have been highly commended in the Forward and Bridport prizes. He was a founding editor of the award-winning pamphlet publisher ignitionpress\, and has taught creative writing to young people with both First Story and Arvon. He lives in Oxford\, where he also works as a psychotherapist.

\nThis month’s poet is Laura Theis. Laura grew up in a place where each street was named after a different fairy tale. She writes in her second language. Her work has appeared in Poetry\, Oxford Poetry\, Magma\, Rattle\, The Irish Times\, Berlin Lit\, and others. Her accolades include the Caterpillar Poetry Prize\, the Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize\, the Oxford Brookes Poetry Prize\, the Hammond House International Literary Award\, the AM Heath Prize\, the Mogford Short Story Prize\, and a Forward Prize nomination. Her poetry debut was the winner of the Brian Dempsey Memorial Prize\, an Oxford Poetry Library Book-of-the-Month\, and an Elgin Award nominee. Her collection A Spotter’s Guide To Invisible Things won the Live Canon Collection Prize and received the Arthur Welton Award from the Society of Authors. Her most recent book\, Introduction to Cloud Care\, was published by Broken Sleep Books in 2025 and her children’s debut Poems from a Witch’s Pocket\, is coming out in September. \nFeel free to email any queries to opldraftingtable@gmail.com

If you are unsure about your performance\, speak to the host when you arrive.\nYou should aim to read something that’s around one page or two minutes – this ensures that everyone has enough time to read.\n\nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set. This month’s featured poet is Fatima Jafar. Fatima is a writer from Karachi\, Pakistan\, currently based in California. She is a Wallace Stegner Fellow in Poetry at Stanford University. She completed her MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College in 2023. Her work has been published in The Kenyon Review\, The Cortland Review\, The Drift\, Wasafiri\, and elsewhere. She is working on her first full-length manuscript. \nThe theme for the evening is HOME. Home can be a city\, a country\, a building with four walls and a roof\, a person\, a state of mind\, or just a feeling of belonging. Settle in\, make yourself at home\, and bring your cosiest\, homiest work to share with us. \nThe session starts at 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free. \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand!
