SUMMARY:Getting Started With Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’ve never written a poem before\, have just started to write\, or aren’t sure if what you’re writing is poetry\, this monthly workshop is a chance to carve out some time for writing. \nIn each workshop\, we’ll read a poem together\, and use it as our starting point. We’ll suggest some prompts you could take from the poem\, and ideas you might like to borrow. There will be plenty of time to write\, and plenty more prompts if you get stuck. At the end of the session\, you’ll be able to share what you’ve written in a supportive environment. \nAll you need to bring is yourself – these workshops are here for you to enjoy writing and build confidence in your voice. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. \nTell us you’re coming by booking a free ticket here. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Shape of Poetry workshop
DESCRIPTION:Many of us feel intimidated by formal poetry: Some of us consider it too restrictive and governed by rules\, while others write exclusively in form. This workshop is an invitation to all writers of poetry\, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years\, to explore the creative potential of poetic forms. \nOur monthly sessions happen on the second Saturday of the month from 1pm til 2.30pm in The Community Works. During each of our workshops\, we will look at the conventions of a particular form such as the sonnet\, ghazal\, or haiku\, read example poems\, and write our own versions. This workshop will be a collaborative space for us to explore how experimenting with limitations or restrictions in our writing can give us whole new ways of expressing ourselves\, and open unexpected doors! \n\n\nAll you need to bring is yourself – pens and paper will be supplied. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+.\n\nAttendance is free\, but please do register in advance here to let us know you’re coming.\n\nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. SUMMARY:Stillness in Words Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A workshop series on poetry and mindfulness \nWe live in a world full of distractions. In today’s fast-paced digital world\, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to be mindful. Writing poetry can be a powerful mindfulness activity because it allows you to explore yourself\, your thoughts and feelings and your surroundings. Writing poetry can also help steer you away from self-focused thoughts and open your mind to new ways of seeing things. \nFrom August to November 2023\, Oxford Poetry Library will be running the Stillness in Words poetry and mindfulness workshop series on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 1.30 to 3.00 p.m. London Time or 6 p.m. Indian Standard Time. \nThe workshop will be facilitated by Prarthana Banikya\, one of the volunteers at Oxford Poetry Library. Prarthana is a poet and editor with over 12 years of experience in the learning design industry. She has a graduate’s degree in Sociology and a certificate in poetry from the London School of Journalism. Her writings\, photographs and initiatives have appeared in Scroll\, Homegrown\, Mid-Day\, Architectural Digest\, Asia Writes\, Feminism India\, Namnai and Stories of the Nature of Cities\, among others. She is the recipient of the 2018 Orange Flower Award for poetry and the founder and editor of The Little Journal of Northeast India. \nThe workshop sessions will help you explore the relationship between writing and mindfulness through practical writing prompts and guided learning activities. The workshop will focus more on poetry as a medium of expression and less on poetic form. \nThe sessions are free and suitable for anyone over the age of 16. While each session will cover different themes and activities\, you could enrol for all four sessions or any that work well for you. No previous experience of writing poetry is needed. \nLet us know you are coming by registering for free here \nPlease email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com if you have any questions about the workshop.

SUMMARY:Invitation to a Rivonia Declaration: A workshop
DESCRIPTION:What are you willing to die for? Join Dave Neita for this interactive writing workshop on 1 November at 6.30pm at The Community Works and explore that very question as part of the Kicking the Bucket Festival 2023. \nIn the Rivonia Trials\, 1963-64\, lawyer and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela (on the 20th April 1964) gave a speech in his own defence from the dock.  Madiba (accused and future president) spoke about the fact that he had lived a life promoting harmony and equal opportunity for all.  He declared them ideals he lived for and if needs be he would be prepared to die for these ideals as well.  Nelson Mandela was given life in prison at this trial but the ideals could never be incarcerated.  Madiba came out of prison 27 years later to continue to promote these ideals for the rest of his life until he died in 2013 … the ideals live on! \nThis workshop will give the participants an opportunity to have a Rivonia Moment where they get to think about the ideals they want to live for and the ones they are prepared to die for.  Participants will have a chance to write a living will of ideals using poetry and illustrations and furthermore the opportunity to recite and share their ideals in a supportive group setting. \nThere will be an opportunity to enjoy supper at Lula’s Ethiopian and Eritrean Cuisine (in the same venue) after the workshop. Please contact Lula’s direct to book.

SUMMARY:This Is Just To Say: spoken word open mic
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library presents its monthly spoken word open mic night! Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing\, and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. Slots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage is F.K.V. Moll (‘Cesca’ to her friends). Cesca is a novelist\, mental health advocate and yarn enthusiast based in Oxford. She has known she was destined to be a fantasy writer ever since her parents gave her three initials\, and from an early age has been reconciling her love for Tolkien’s work with being the sort of opinionated\, bossy woman that would make the man himself very cross. \nJoin us as Cesca reads an extract from her debut novel\, True North\, for the very first time. Its heroine\, Frida\, has a lot she hasn’t been able to say\, and perhaps you do too? Maybe there’s a truth you’ve never spoken\, a secret you’ve never told\, or a rant that you’re just dying to get off your chest? \nThe session’s theme will be ‘Breaking our silence’ and we encourage seasoned performers and total beginners alike to join us for an evening focussed on things too long unsaid. If you’ve been meaning to perform for a while but haven’t quite plucked up the courage\, take this as your sign to speak up and let whatever it is you need to share out into the world! \nOur next session will happen on December 9th\, 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free. Cash only! \nThere will be a bar at this event\, so it is no longer BYOB! \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand!

SUMMARY:This Is Just To Say: spoken word open mic
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library presents a brand new spoken word open mic night! \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage will be Rehema Njambi. Rehema is a Kenyan-born\, British-raised poet and writer whose work centres on womanhood\, agency\, identity\, faith and family. She has been a performance poet for over ten years and has performed broadly in the UK\, Nairobi and the US. In December 2020 she was longlisted for the Merky Books New Wrtiers’ Prize. Her first collection\, This House\, was published by The Emma Press in 2021. Links: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook \n\nThe theme of the evening will be RESOLUTIONS. Perhaps predictably for a January event\, but we’re hoping to make it our own. Interpret it as you will but perhaps you can ask yourself… what are you resolved to do in 2024? What have you resolved in the past? \n\nOur next session will happen on January 16th (note the slightly later date this month!)\, 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU).

SUMMARY:The Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:People who never read poetry don’t write poems that are worth reading – Wendy Cope \n  \nIf you’re keen to find a way in to reading and appreciating poetry\, discover new writing\, and open your mind to the world of poetry\, welcome to The Reading Circle. \n  \nCome to OPL’s poetry reading group where we’ll share and discuss poems written in the 20th and 21st centuries in a relaxed and inclusive peer-led environment. \n  \nQuestions we’ll be asking include: \n  \nWhat makes a poem ‘work’?  \nWhy do we like a poem? Why don’t we?  \nIs there such a thing as a fashionable poem? Does it matter?  \nCan we love a poem we don’t fully understand? What makes mystery different to obscurity?  \nWhat might we learn from other poets that can help us enrich our own craft?  \n  \nThe Reading Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month\, 1-3 pm in The Community Works. It will initially run for three sessions – January 20th\, February 17th\, and March 16th. \n  \nWe suggest a donation to attend each session: £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more) and registration is required here. Donations are optional and shouldn’t be prohibitive to you attending\, but all proceeds go to the running costs of the Oxford Poetry Library and our ability to continue providing these sorts of sessions. \n  \nFacilitated by the established writers and prolific readers Alan Buckley and Vanessa Lampert \n  \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand.
