SUMMARY:Getting Started With Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’ve never written a poem before\, have just started to write\, or aren’t sure if what you’re writing is poetry\, this monthly workshop is a chance to carve out some time for writing. \nIn each workshop\, we’ll read a poem together\, and use it as our starting point. We’ll suggest some prompts you could take from the poem\, and ideas you might like to borrow. There will be plenty of time to write\, and plenty more prompts if you get stuck. At the end of the session\, you’ll be able to share what you’ve written in a supportive environment. \nAll you need to bring is yourself – these workshops are here for you to enjoy writing and build confidence in your voice. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. \nTell us you’re coming by booking your free ticket here. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com

SUMMARY:This Is Just To Say: spoken word open mic
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library presents a brand new spoken word open mic night! Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing\, and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. Slots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage will be Rehema Njambi. Rehema is a Kenyan-born\, British-raised poet and writer whose work centres on womanhood\, agency\, identity\, faith and family. She has been a performance poet for over ten years and has performed broadly in the UK\, Nairobi and the US. In December 2020 she was longlisted for the Merky Books New Wrtiers’ Prize. Her first collection\, This House\, was published by The Emma Press in 2021. Links: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook \n\nThe theme of the evening will be RESOLUTIONS. Perhaps predictably for a January event\, but we’re hoping to make it our own. Interpret it as you will but perhaps you can ask yourself… what are you resolved to do in 2024? What have you resolved in the past? \n\nOur next session will happen on January 16th (note the slightly later date this month!)\, 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free. Cash only! \nThere will be a bar at this event\, so it is no longer BYOB! \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand!

SUMMARY:The Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:People who never read poetry don’t write poems that are worth reading – Wendy Cope \n  \nIf you’re keen to find a way in to reading and appreciating poetry\, discover new writing\, and open your mind to the world of poetry\, welcome to The Reading Circle. \n  \nCome to OPL’s poetry reading group where we’ll share and discuss poems written in the 20th and 21st centuries in a relaxed and inclusive peer-led environment. \n  \nQuestions we’ll be asking include: \n  \nWhat makes a poem ‘work’?  \nWhy do we like a poem? Why don’t we?  \nIs there such a thing as a fashionable poem? Does it matter?  \nCan we love a poem we don’t fully understand? What makes mystery different to obscurity?  \nWhat might we learn from other poets that can help us enrich our own craft?  \n  \nThe Reading Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month\, 1-3 pm in The Community Works. It will initially run for three sessions – January 20th\, February 17th\, and March 16th. \n  \nWe suggest a donation to attend each session: £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more) and registration is required here. Donations are optional and shouldn’t be prohibitive to you attending\, but all proceeds go to the running costs of the Oxford Poetry Library and our ability to continue providing these sorts of sessions. \n  \nFacilitated by the established writers and prolific readers Alan Buckley and Vanessa Lampert \n  \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand.

SUMMARY:The Shape of Poetry workshop
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from last year\, we bring The Shape of Poetry back for one day only! Join us for this free workshop all about poetic form! \nMany of us feel intimidated by formal poetry: Some of us consider it too restrictive and governed by rules\, while others write exclusively in form. This workshop is an invitation to all writers of poetry\, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years\, to explore the creative potential of poetic forms. \nThis session will take place from 1pm til 2.30pm in The Community Works. During each of our workshops\, we will look at the conventions of a particular form such as the sonnet\, ghazal\, or haiku\, read example poems\, and write our own versions. This workshop will be a collaborative space for us to explore how experimenting with limitations or restrictions in our writing can give us whole new ways of expressing ourselves\, and open unexpected doors! \nAll you need to bring is yourself – pens and paper will be supplied. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. Attendance is free\, but please do register to let us know you’re coming here. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Drafting Table: performance session
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Drafting Table\, where we share our emerging poems with each other and provide feedback in a safe and inclusive environment. \nMaybe you have been attending the Getting Started sessions and feel ready to edit your work and develop your ideas. Maybe you’re an experienced but unpublished poet who wants to take those next steps in your poetry career. Just bring a willingness to receive and provide feedback with the whole group! \nOnce a month\, we invite a published poet to join us. There will be a short reading of their poems followed by a workshop where attendees can learn more about the creative process\, get an insight into what it means to be a poet\, and share our work with them. \nThis month’s poet is Maya Little. Maya is a writer and theatre maker whose work focuses on attention\, connection and mis/communication. Her writing has appeared in The Rambling and the Oxford Review of Books\, among others\, and she is a member of the 2023-24 Roundhouse Poetry Collective. Her most recent project was ONLYCONNECT\, an interactive digital story about friendship and capitalism. \nFeel free to email any queries to opldraftingtable@gmail.com

SUMMARY:TASTE: A poetry workshop
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library is collaborating with The Oxford Hub to launch our VERY FIRST poetry competition on the theme of taste. \n  \nThis OPL poetry competition in association with the Oxford Hub is a clarion call to all new and experienced poets to make their voices heard. Building on the phenomenal success of OPL’s monthly open mic sessions and its many workshops and events\, we want to extend our poetry welcome within and beyond the city boundaries\, beyond artificial town and gown limits\, beyond all physical and psychological obstacles no less! We aim to bring together all those passionate about poems in a bid to highlight the many talented but possibly under-celebrated poets we know are out there. And for those who just like to read and listen to poetry\, we will provide a feast of entertainment by sharing new work on the sensory theme of TASTE. \n  \nAnd if you’re struggling for a bit of inspiration… Join us for a guided poetry workshop based on the competition theme\, TASTE on Sunday February 4th from 6.00pm – 7.30pm in the library! Maya Little (OPL volunteer and former leader of our very popular Getting Started with Poetry workshop series) will have some mouthwatering writing exercises to stimulate your poetry taste buds and help you put your food fantasies on the page. \n  \nThe workshop is free\, and there is no obligation to submit your work to the competition at the end of it. However\, if you are keen to submit your work to our competition after\, you can see the full details about the competition and entry requirements here. \n\n

SUMMARY:"This pain is not just our own": A writing workshop on gendered health & imagining collective responses
DESCRIPTION:We can often feel alone in our pain\, but in this writing workshop we will be with it together. The title quote is taken from Rachael Boast’s poetry anthology which speaks to living with chronic illness at a time of global crisis. In this workshop\, we will be unearthing the scale of our personal and collective suffering. We will start with discussions of illness but expand outwards\, thinking about how our bodies are entangled with the world around us. From this\, we will explore how together we can build caring\, creative and communal responses. \nWe will do this through creative writing exercises\, both poetry and creative non-fiction. You don’t need to have written about this before\, or have any particular skill level or experience to take part. \nThe workshop will take place on March 9th\, at 1pm-3pm\, as part of the International Women’s Day events at The Community Works. All materials will be provided. The session is priced at £5\, and tickets are £2-£10 based on means. Please register to let us know you are attending here. \nThe session will be facilitated by Rachel Piper (she/they)\, author of Care Curriculum\, who will be drawing on her background in co-producing healthcare services with those with lived experience\, her work in building movements for health justice\, as well as her Gender Studies MA research into the politics of both solidarity and ecology surrounding Endometriosis. \nWe are in the process of also organising an online version of this event for those unable to attend in person. Dates and more details to be announced soon. \nThis workshop is brought to you by LIT\, a reading and writing group for group for cis and trans women\, trans men\, non-binary people\, and people of other minority genders to share their own work and the work of others. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com \n  \nThis workshop is in collaboration with Makespace Oxford’s celebrations of International Women’s Day which are taking place throughout March. Throughout the month\, we will be running events and workshops which feature the poems of women\, and/or those which champion and celebrate the voices of women\, or which resonate with this year’s IWD theme of “Inspire Inclusion”.

SUMMARY:Postbox Poetry
DESCRIPTION:In a world of flooding inboxes\, instant messages and video calls\, nothing compares to the feeling of writing a letter. Unlike the immediacy of emails or calls\, with letters\, one reflects on what they want to say to someone and takes the time to share their thoughts and experiences with them. \n  \nFrom March to August 2024\, the Oxford Poetry Library is running the Letterbox Poetry workshop series on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 11 to 12.30 PM UK time (4.30 to 6 PM India time). \n  \nThe workshop will explore the process of writing letters as a way to create poems. It will encourage participants to write about places\, people\, ideas and objects using letters as a medium of expression. The workshop is for readers of poetry\, people who share a love for letters\, beginners and experienced writers and anyone else in between or beyond. \n  \nDuring the workshop\, participants will find how they can use the letter writing process to build their own narratives and understand themselves and those around them a little better. They will work on writing prompts\, read famous epistolary poems and excerpts from epistolary novels and have the option to be paired with another participant to have a mini letter-writing exchange through the course of the workshop! \nFor those interested in presenting their poems to a wider audience can take part in the Workshop Showcase in which a few handpicked poems will be spotlighted on the Oxford Poetry Library’s social media pages. \nThe sessions are suitable for anyone over the age of 16. While each session will cover different writing themes and activities\, one could enrol for all six sessions or any session or sessions they prefer. Each session is priced at £5\, and participants also have the option to opt from a sliding ticket price range of £2-£10 based on their means. \n  \nPlease email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com if you have any questions about the workshop series. \n  \nAbout the facilitator: Prarthana Banikya is a poet and editor with over 12 years of experience in the learning design industry. Her writings\, photographs and other work have appeared in Scroll\, Homegrown\, Mid-Day\, Architectural Digest\, Asia Writes\, Feminism India\, Namnai and Stories of the Nature of Cities\, among others. She is the recipient of the 2018 Orange Flower Award for poetry and the founder and editor of The Little Journal of Northeast India. She has most recently conducted the Stillness in Words poetry workshop for the Oxford Poetry Library.

\n  \nThis particular edition of The Reading Circle is in collaboration with Makespace Oxford’s celebrations of International Women’s Day which are taking place throughout March. We will be featuring the poems of women\, and/or those which champion and celebrate the voices of women\, or which resonate with this year’s IWD theme of “Inspire Inclusion”. \n  \n \n

Cash only (there are nearby cashpoints)! \n  \nBe there or be square. \n  \nThis particular edition of The Hip Crowd is in collaboration with Makespace Oxford’s celebrations of International Women’s Day which are taking place throughout March. We particularly invite performances from women\, and/or performances which champion and celebrate the voices of women\, or which resonate with this year’s IWD theme of “Inspire Inclusion”.

Her recent work had appeared in the London Magazine\, Shearsman Magazine\, the Friday Poem\, and elsewhere. She’s also an old friend of the library\, having previously run our Poetry Door workshops\, amongst other things! \nOur next session will happen on April 2nd 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free.
