Through readings\, interactive exercises\, group writing games\, and generative prompts\, we will explore the power and joy of writing together. We’ll be working in a variety of forms\, inspired by a diverse set of voices and themes. Serena is a writer and researcher interested in the impact of creative writing on society. SUMMARY:This is just to say: spoken word open mic night
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. \nSlots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! Performers entry is free! \nThis month\, we will be theming our evening’s proceedings on VISION. Interpret this as you will – whether it’s about sight\, perspective\, looking into the past or the future\, or seeing things in a whole new way…\n \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage is Shaw Worth. Shaw is a student and writer living in Oxford. He was a Foyle Young Poet of the Year in 2016\, 2017\, and 2019; his work has appeared on the stage in Oxford and in print and online in ‘iamb’\, the ‘close’ tinyletter\, the Waltham Poetry Competitions and elsewhere. He is currently a reader for Taco Bell Quarterly. \nAll very welcome to just come and listen. This event is non-ticketed\, with entry £5 on the door (£2 concessions/Patreon patrons). \nDoors at 7.30pm (performers advised to arrive a little earlier!) \nNote: there is no bar but the event is BYOB (wine and beer only\, no spirits please!) and this event is 18+

DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library presents a brand new spoken word open mic night! Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing\, and spell-casting.\n\nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. Slots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served!\n\nThis month\, we will be theming our evening’s proceedings on ROOTS AND WINGS. We are kicking off 2023 thinking about where we came from and where we might take flight to in the year to come… but interpret the theme however you like!\n\nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage is Laura Theis. Laura Theis writes prose\, poems and songs in her second language. Her work appears in Poetry\, Mslexia\, Magma\, Rattle\, Strange Horizons\, Asimov’s\, AE SciFi\, Ink\, Sweat and Tears\, The Caterpillar\, Jellyfish Review\, Aesthetica\, and anthologies by Candlestick Press\, Broken Sleep Books\, Pan Macmillan\, etc. Her Elgin-Award-nominated debut ‘how to extricate yourself’\, an Oxford Poetry Library Book of the Month\, won the Brian Dempsey Memorial Prize. She received the AM Heath Prize\, Oxford Brookes Poetry Prize\, Mogford Prize\, Hammond House International Literary Award\, and a Forward Prize nomination. Shortlisted for the Women Poets’ Prize and the Bridport Prize\, she was a finalist for the National Poetry Competition\, the BBC Short Story Award\, and the Alpine Fellowship. Her collection ‘A Spotter’s Guide for Invisible Things’ won the 2022 Live Canon Collection Prize\, received the Arthur Welton Award from the Society of Authors\, and will be published by Live Canon in 2023. SUMMARY:An Oxford Literary Quiz Night
DESCRIPTION:In January 2023 Oxford Poetry Library will host “An Oxford Literary Quiz Night“: A pub quiz without a pub\, a chance to show off your knowledge of poetry\, prose\, books and bookshops. We’ve got 100 questions\, covering an eclectic range of literary subjects. And there will be bonus points available for the best limerick. \n \n\nDo you know your Auster from your Austen? Your RR Martin from your RR Tolkien? Your Yeats from your Keats? Come along for an evening of fun and friendly quizzing competition. \nThe quiz will take place in The Community Works building\, near Oxford Railway Station. Arrive from 7pm on Monday 16th January. Teams of up to 6 people. Bring your own drinks. £5 per person on the team\, with all profits supporting the Oxford Poetry Library. \nWe’d particularly like to get teams representing the many bookish organisations in Oxford – libraries\, colleges\, bookshops\, publishers\, student groups and book clubs. SUMMARY:Finding the Words: Creative Writing for Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Doing something creative and expressive is great for our sense of well-being\, and creative writing is a wonderful way to express ourselves. It can help us make sense of our experiences and find new and helpful ways of seeing things.  \nFrom January to June 2023 Oxford Poetry Library will be running creative writing for well-being workshops on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 1.30 to 3pm.  \nThe workshops will offer time and space to enjoy creative and expressive writing in a safe\, relaxed and supportive setting. There will be an engaging theme for each workshop\, and we’ll use a variety of writing exercises and prompts to help words flow.  \nThe workshops will be facilitated by Mary Mountford\, one of the volunteer librarians at Oxford Poetry Library. Mary is currently studying for a master’s degree in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes. She is also a Registered Nurse and works at Maggie’s Centre in Oxford where she runs a creative writing for well-being group and other supportive groups for people with cancer. She says\, “I’ve used writing most of my life to help me think things through and express my thoughts and feelings. I enjoy writing alone and in groups. It’s a great way to learn about myself and to connect with other people.” \nThese workshops are suitable for anyone over the age of 16 and no previous experience of creative writing is needed.  \nThe workshops are free. Pens\, pencils and paper will be provided but please feel free to bring your own notebook if you wish. \nWe have space for 15 people to participate so please check availability and book a free ticket here. \nYou’ll be very welcome to come and discover the joys and benefits of writing. DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. \nThis month\, we will be theming our evening’s proceedings on TIME. Bring your timeliest writing on the subject of time: its passing\, wasting it\, spending it\, the good times\, the bad times\, and everything in between.\n\nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage is Alan Buckley. Alan Buckley is a poet\, editor\, and poetry tutor. He was brought up on Merseyside\, and now lives in Oxford. He is the author of two pamphlets – Shiver (2009) and The Long Haul (2016) – and his first full collection\, Touched\, was published by HappenStance in 2020. His work has been highly commended in the Forward and Bridport prizes. For many years he ran events locally featuring both poetry and music\, and is one of the stand-in hosts for Oxford’s Catweazle Club\, which he has performed at regularly since 2004. He was a founding editor of the award-winning pamphlet publisher ignitionpress (based at Oxford Brookes). He co-ran a live literature project at HMP Grendon from 2006 to 2007\, and between 2011 and 2019 was a First Story Writer-in-Residence at several schools in Oxfordshire.\nSlots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! Performers entry is free! \nAll very welcome to just come and listen. SUMMARY:Finding the Words: Creative Writing for Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Doing something creative and expressive is great for our sense of well-being\, and creative writing is a wonderful way to express ourselves. It can help us make sense of our experiences and find new and helpful ways of seeing things. \nFrom January to June 2023 Oxford Poetry Library will be running creative writing for well-being workshops on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 1.30 to 3pm.  \nThe workshops will offer time and space to enjoy creative and expressive writing in a safe\, relaxed and supportive setting. There will be an engaging theme for each workshop\, and we’ll use a variety of writing exercises and prompts to help words flow.  \nThe workshops will be facilitated by Mary Mountford\, one of the volunteer librarians at Oxford Poetry Library. Mary is currently studying for a master’s degree in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes. She is also a Registered Nurse and works at Maggie’s Centre in Oxford where she runs a creative writing for well-being group and other supportive groups for people with cancer. She says\, “I’ve used writing most of my life to help me think things through and express my thoughts and feelings. I enjoy writing alone and in groups. It’s a great way to learn about myself and to connect with other people.” \nThese workshops are suitable for anyone over the age of 16 and no previous experience of creative writing is needed.  \nThe workshops are free. Pens\, pencils and paper will be provided but please feel free to bring your own notebook if you wish. \nWe have space for 15 people to participate so please check availability and book a free ticket here. \nYou’ll be very welcome to come and discover the joys and benefits of writing. Em Pritchard is a poet and bookseller from Oxford. They have performed in the BBC Fringe Slam and the Roundhouse slam\, are a member of The Writing Squad\, were specially commended in the Wasafiri New Writing Prize\, and have poems published in magazines including The Rialto\, Magma and Oxford Poetry. They have a masters in Poetry and Poetics from the University of York\, where they wrote about Elizabeth Bishop’s butch poetics and the queer trees of Frank O’Hara. SUMMARY:Finding the Words: Creative Writing for Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Doing something creative and expressive is great for our sense of well-being\, and creative writing is a wonderful way to express ourselves. It can help us make sense of our experiences and find new and helpful ways of seeing things. \nFrom January to June 2023 Oxford Poetry Library will be running creative writing for well-being workshops on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 1.30 to 3pm.  \nThe workshops will offer time and space to enjoy creative and expressive writing in a safe\, relaxed and supportive setting. There will be an engaging theme for each workshop\, and we’ll use a variety of writing exercises and prompts to help words flow.  \nThe workshops will be facilitated by Mary Mountford\, one of the volunteer librarians at Oxford Poetry Library. Mary is currently studying for a master’s degree in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes. She is also a Registered Nurse and works at Maggie’s Centre in Oxford where she runs a creative writing for well-being group and other supportive groups for people with cancer. She says\, “I’ve used writing most of my life to help me think things through and express my thoughts and feelings. I enjoy writing alone and in groups. It’s a great way to learn about myself and to connect with other people.” \nThese workshops are suitable for anyone over the age of 16 and no previous experience of creative writing is needed.  \nThe workshops are free. Pens\, pencils and paper will be provided but please feel free to bring your own notebook if you wish. \nWe have space for 15 people to participate so please check availability and book a free ticket here. \nYou’ll be very welcome to come and discover the joys and benefits of writing. Caitlin is the author of Thin Slices (Verve Poetry Press) and Abortion Ecologies in Southern African Fiction (Bloomsbury Academic). Her writing has appeared in PN Review\, Tears in the Fence\, Gutter\, Stand and elsewhere\, and has been funded by Arts Council England. She is a winner of the Douglas Livingstone Creative Writing Competition and the Heather Drummond Memorial Prize for Poetry. Caitlin is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Leeds. \n  \nRegular attendance is encouraged\, to help us build a trusting and collaborative community. DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. \nSlots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! Performers entry is free! \nThis month\, the theme of the evening is WHATEVER THE WEATHER. So bring your storms\, your rainy days\, your sunshine\, your thunder and lightning\, your droughts – metaphorical or literal! \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage is Vanessa Lampert. Vanessa had her first poem published in 2019 at the age of 55. So excited by this was she that she kept at it and has since won the Café Writers prize\, the Edward Thomas prize\, the Sentinel prize and the Ver Poetry prize twice and come second in the Fish\, Yeovil\, Oxford Brookes\, Ware\, and Kent & Sussex prizes. She was commended in the National Poetry Competition 2020 and listed in 2021. Her pamphlet ‘On Long Loan’ was published by Live Canon in 2020. Her first full collection ‘Say It With Me’ will be published by Seren in April 2023 and is nominated for The Forward First Collection prize. In the same book she also has a nomination in the Best Single Poem category. \nAll very welcome to just come and listen. This event is non-ticketed\, with entry £5 on the door (£2 concessions/Patreon patrons). \nDoors at 7.30pm (performers advised to arrive from 7pm!) \nNote: we have a bar available on the night courtesy of Lula’s Ethiopian Cuisine\, so this event is no longer BYOB!

DESCRIPTION:In these workshops\, we will consider how poetry can be a tool for self-expression and social justice\, for empathy\, and empowerment. \nEveryone has something valuable to express and poetry can help us process our own experiences and learn about the experiences of others. Through readings\, interactive exercises\, group writing games\, and generative prompts\, we will explore the power and joy of writing together. We’ll be working in a variety of forms\, inspired by a diverse set of voices and themes. Serena is a writer and researcher interested in the impact of creative writing on society.
