SUMMARY:How to be a Tarot Card (or a Teenager) Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join Jennifer A McGowan as she celebrates the launch of her second full poetry collection\, How to be a Tarot Card (or A Teenager) hosted in collaboration with Arachne Press\n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nTaking one of the major Arcana of Tarot as the starting point for each of the poems\, Jennifer A McGowan explores the joys and angst of adolescence\, her father’s falling out with the military\, and many other themes in between. \nThe tarot has been used to play games since the 15th century. Since that time each card has also accumulated meanings. By the 18th century the tarot was used for divination or for oracular purposes\, much like the Delphic oracles of old. Nowadays the trumps\, or major arcana\, are believed to chronicle\, symbologically\, the journey of the Fool through life. \nHow to be a Tarot Card (or a Teenager) explores\, exploits\, and sometimes downright twists the major arcana and the meanings they have accumulated\, in the order in which the many hundreds of tarot decks now travelling the world present them. The Star\, connoting hope\, exists simultaneously as metaphor and feral dog; the rebirth nestled inside the Death card becomes female friendship and escape from patriarchal binds. \nTo revise means to re-see. These poems are revisionist\, for what is poetry but a way of seeing\, and what is the poet except the fool playing games\, chronicling their journey? \nTwitter: \n@arachnepress @JAMcGowan_Poet \n\n \n\n\nThis launch takes place at Oxford Poetry Library in The Community Works \nFree! We encourage you to buy a book or two\, of course\, otherwise what would be the point? You can preorder a book to pick up if you like. Jennifer will be very happy to sign them for you. \nThere will be refreshments including a home made cake\, and we recommend you consider booking a table at Lula’s before or after! \nAccessible venue – step free via side entrance

SUMMARY:The Poetry Door: Who Am I?
DESCRIPTION:In these workshops\, we will consider how poetry can be a tool for self-expression and social justice\, for empathy\, and empowerment. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis month’s workshop is on the topic “Who am I?” We will look at how to write for self-expression and think about topics like Identity\, Memory and Belonging.\n\n\nEveryone has something valuable to express and poetry can help us process our own experiences and learn about the experiences of others. Through readings\, interactive exercises\, group writing games\, and generative prompts\, we will explore the power and joy of writing together. We’ll be working in a variety of forms\, inspired by a diverse set of voices and themes. Looking forward to collaborating with you all and seeing your beautiful words!\n\n\n\n\n\nThese sessions will be led by Serena Alagappan. Serena is a writer and researcher interested in the impact of creative writing on society. SUMMARY:Light about the Darkness
DESCRIPTION:The flowers came out and they were on our side – Kenneth Koch \nThe leaves are coming uncoupled from their trees – James (age 5) \nPoems have a special capacity to embrace dark subjects with a light touch. The ‘word machinery’ of a poem can hold such diverse feelings as joy and grief close together and harmoniously. \nAs children we use language experimentally until our imaginative playfulness is discouraged in the name of ‘correctness.’ As poets we must search again for the landscape in which a greater freedom and linguistic athleticism was briefly ours. \nIn this workshop we will examine a selection of poems by contemporary poets\, particularly focussing upon the mechanisms they employ to captivate their reader by swiftly establishing warm rapport with them. \nWe will write quickly to prompts branching from the poems studied\, aiming to outrun our inner police force and its inflexible rules of strict and serious\, of this is right and that is wrong. And develop how to welcome readers into poems where dark subjects are handled\, with humour and a light touch. \nAbout Vanessa:  \nVanessa Lampert is an acupuncturist and poet from Oxfordshire. She has an MA in writing poetry from Newcastle University and Poetry School London. Since 2019 she has won the Café Writers prize\, the Edward Thomas prize\, the Sentinel prize and the Ver Poetry prize twice and come second in the Fish\, Yeovil\, Oxford Brookes\, Ware\, and Kent & Sussex prizes. She has been placed in many others including a commendation in the National Poetry Competition 2020 for which she was also listed in 2021. \nVanessa’s work has been widely published\, most recently been in Magma\, The Moth\, The Oxford Times and Poetry Wales. She co-edits The Alchemy Spoon magazine and teaches children for Learn with Leaders in India. She has run workshops for Hive South Yorkshire\, Poetry School London\, Stanza groups countrywide and Aldeburgh Poetry Festival. Her pamphlet ‘On Long Loan’ is published by Live Canon and her first collection ‘Say It With Me’ will be published by Seren in April 2023. \nThis event is free\, open to all ages and abilities\, and all materials are provided. Please let us know you are coming by booking a ticket here. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do let us know in advance if you have accessibility requirements via the contact form below or emailing us on oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWebsite\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ

SUMMARY:Makaris at the Meadow: Zine Launch and Multilingual Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:This event is delivered in collaboration with The Burner\, an Oxford art collective.\n\n\nMakar\, ‘maker’\, was the Older Scots word for poet\, as immortalised in William Dunbar’s Lament for the Makaris. Makar retains the identity of creative practical activity and art from which our ‘poetry’ stems: the Ancient Greek poieō meant to make and to compose poetry. If poets are makers\, then translators of poetry are doubly-so.\n\n\nMakaris at the Meadow will be the launch of the From Apples to Oranges poetry zine and an evening of multilingual poetry reading. The Burner is seeking submissions consisting of original translations of poetry for both the zine and the reading. No prior experience in poetry translation is required! Submissions are open until the 22nd of August and can be sent to: theburnermag@gmail.com

SUMMARY:A Collaborative Introduction to Translating Poetry
DESCRIPTION:This event is delivered in collaboration with The Burner\, an Oxford art collective. \nThe workshop will serve as an introduction to translating poetry and as a forum to discuss poetry in translation. The workshop will be facilitated by writers with experience in translating poetry\, although the workshop will be by no means an attempt to transmit this experience. \nInstead\, attendees and facilitators will attempt to answer together questions regarding the theory and practice of translation\, while also working together on translating lines of poetry. \nAttendees are more than welcome to draw from this experience and submit to the From Apples to Oranges zine that will be launched at the event Makaris in the Meadow on August 25th. \nNo prior experience in poetry translation is required\, the event is free\, and we’ll provide all the materials needed. SUMMARY:Getting Started With Poetry: "Home"
DESCRIPTION:Whether you’ve never written a poem before\, have just started to write\, or aren’t sure if what you’re writing is poetry\, this monthly workshop is a chance to carve out some time for writing.In each workshop\, we’ll read a poem together\, and use it as our starting point. We’ll suggest some prompts you could take from the poem\, and ideas you might like to borrow.  There will be plenty of time to write\, and plenty more prompts if you get stuck. At the end of the session\, you’ll be able to share what you’ve written in a supportive environment. \nIn August’s workshop\, we’ll think about ‘home’ – whether it’s a feeling or a place\, fixed or in motion. We’ll find ways to form our tangled relationships with home into clear structures and articulations. \nAll you need to bring is yourself – these workshops are here for you to enjoy writing and build confidence in your voice. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. \nTell us you’ll be coming by booking a ticket here. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com or fill in the contact form below. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWebsite\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nMessage\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ

SUMMARY:This Is Just To Say: Spoken word open mic night
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. \nSlots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! Performers entry is free! \nEvery month we feature a performer with an extended set. This month’s featured artist is Orlando. Orlando was force-fed ‘The Lady of Shalott’ by their mother as a child and as such vowed to avoid poetry for the rest of their life. As with their other resolutions\, Orlando failed and finally picked up the mic in the summer of 2017 in a whirlwind of peer pressure and wine. Over the last few years Orlando has featured in the London poetry scene for events such as the Farrago Poetry Slam\, Speak Equal\, and Big Trouble. In 2018\, just 5 months after approaching the stage\, they earned 8th place in Canada’s National Poetry Slam\, and in February of last year they achieved 3rd place in the UK National Poetry Slam\, one-up on the 4th place of the year before. Orlando speaks with passion and ease born of a deep love of words\, captivating and moving audiences in the most exquisitely powerful way: a must-see if you are into the spoken word. \nAll very welcome to just come and listen. This event is non-ticketed\, with entry £5 on the door (£2 concessions/Patreon patrons). \nDoors at 7.30pm (performers advised to arrive a little earlier!) \nNote: there is no bar but the event is BYOB (wine and beer only\, no spirits please!) and this event is 18+

In July\, this will be Stilly’s Terrible Drawn Tales. Stilly has lived in Iffley\, Oxford for the past 18 years. Originally from Yorkshire he is a storyteller\, poet and illustrator who combines all three arts to create something both traditional and new. Imagine a magic lantern show with a powerpoint projector and you’re nearly there. Think of an episode of the Twilight Zone performed by Stanley Holloway\, with pictures by Edward Gorey and words by Roald Dahl\, and you’re not even close. Macabre settings\, twisted endings and saucy tales to thrill\, bewilder and amuse. \nNote: there is no bar but the event is BYOB (wine and beer only\, no spirits please!) and this event is 18+ \n

SUMMARY:Writing New Histories of Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Oxford is a city rich in histories beyond the university. These histories are often part of the present\, and of our everyday lives. \nThis free writing workshop is aimed at residents of Oxford who wish to put into words and images their experiences and memories of the city.  \nWe will explore local and individual memories of everyday life in Oxford\, and will encourage participants to share their own experiences\, with a view to including them in a book that celebrates Oxford’s communities\, and using extracts of the workshop writing in exhibition panels at the Museum of Oxford. No previous experience of writing is required – just be willing to share your memories and experiences\, and be ready to give writing a go. \nThis is a TORCH initiative in partnership with the Museum of Oxford and Oxford Poetry Library\, and workshops will be facilitated by Patrick McGuinness\, poet and writer\, and author of Real Oxford\, a book about the city beyond the dreaming spires. \nNo need to book – drop in from 2pm to 4pm to join in! \nOxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com
