SUMMARY:This Is Just to Say: spoken word open mic
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library presents a spoken word open mic night! Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing\, and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. Slots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! \nThis month’s theme is GAINS AND LOSSES. You win some\, you lose some – but writing can also be about what you collect and what you let go – we want to hear about your ebb and flow! \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage is Issabella Orlando. Issabella is a filmmaker\, artist and writer-turned-poet. She is fascinated by life\, loss\, the creative process\, what we do with our past\, and how we shape our future. Her creative practise is the simple act of collecting images\, stories\, and inspirations while moving through the world\, all of which are then reflected in her poetry\, films and series of poem-print-collages\, The Lilies. She’s currently working on an upcoming film\, writing poems with OPL and sharing them on her Substack archaeology for poets. \nOur next session will happen on June 4th 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free. Cash only! \nThere will be a bar at this event\, so it is no longer BYOB! \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand!

SUMMARY:The Shape of Poetry workshop
DESCRIPTION:Many of us feel intimidated by formal poetry: Some of us consider it too restrictive and governed by rules\, while others write exclusively in form. This workshop is an invitation to all writers of poetry\, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years\, to explore the creative potential of poetic forms. \nOur monthly sessions happen on the second Saturday of the month from 2pm til 4pm in The Community Works. During each of our workshops\, we will look at the conventions of a particular form such as the sonnet\, ghazal\, or haiku\, read example poems\, and write our own versions. This workshop will be a collaborative space for us to explore how experimenting with limitations or restrictions in our writing can give us whole new ways of expressing ourselves\, and open unexpected doors! Whether you’ve never written a poem before\, have just started to write\, or aren’t sure if what you’re writing is poetry\, this monthly workshop is a chance to carve out some time for writing. \nIn each workshop\, we’ll read a poem together\, and use it as our starting point. We’ll suggest some prompts you could take from the poem\, and ideas you might like to borrow. There will be plenty of time to write\, and plenty more prompts if you get stuck. At the end of the session\, you’ll be able to share what you’ve written in a supportive environment. \nAll you need to bring is yourself – these workshops are here for you to enjoy writing and build confidence in your voice. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. \nTickets are priced at £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more\, £2 for those on lower income) and registration is required. If this cost would be prohibitive to your attending\, please email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com and we can allocate you one of our limited free spots in the workshop. Please book your tickets here: https://tinyurl.com/theshapeofpoetry \nNote that the sessions on 8 June\, 13 July\, 12 October\, and 14 December will happen online – links to the Zoom session will be circulated to attendees in advance of these events. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Postbox Poetry
DESCRIPTION:In a world of flooding inboxes\, instant messages and video calls\, nothing compares to the feeling of writing a letter. Unlike the immediacy of emails or calls\, with letters\, one reflects on what they want to say to someone and takes the time to share their thoughts and experiences with them. \n  \nFrom March to August 2024\, the Oxford Poetry Library is running the Letterbox Poetry workshop series on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 11 to 12.30 PM UK time (3.30 to 5 PM India time). \n  \nThe workshop will explore the process of writing letters as a way to create poems. It will encourage participants to write about places\, people\, ideas and objects using letters as a medium of expression. The workshop is for readers of poetry\, people who share a love for letters\, beginners and experienced writers and anyone else in between or beyond. \n  \nDuring the workshop\, participants will find how they can use the letter writing process to build their own narratives and understand themselves and those around them a little better. They will work on writing prompts\, read famous epistolary poems and excerpts from epistolary novels and have the option to be paired with another participant to have a mini letter-writing exchange through the course of the workshop! \nFor those interested in presenting their poems to a wider audience can take part in the Workshop Showcase in which a few handpicked poems will be spotlighted on the Oxford Poetry Library’s social media pages. \nThe sessions are suitable for anyone over the age of 16. While each session will cover different writing themes and activities\, one could enrol for all six sessions or any session or sessions they prefer. Each session is priced at £5\, and participants also have the option to opt from a sliding ticket price range of £2-£10 based on their means. \n  \nPlease email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com if you have any questions about the workshop series. \n  \nAbout the facilitator: Prarthana Banikya is a poet and editor with over 12 years of experience in the learning design industry. Her writings\, photographs and other work have appeared in Scroll\, Homegrown\, Mid-Day\, Architectural Digest\, Asia Writes\, Feminism India\, Namnai and Stories of the Nature of Cities\, among others. She is the recipient of the 2018 Orange Flower Award for poetry and the founder and editor of The Little Journal of Northeast India. She has most recently conducted the Stillness in Words poetry workshop for the Oxford Poetry Library.

SUMMARY:The Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:People who never read poetry don’t write poems that are worth reading – Wendy Cope \n  \nIf you’re keen to find a way in to reading and appreciating poetry\, discover new writing\, and open your mind to the world of poetry\, welcome to The Reading Circle. \n  \nCome to OPL’s poetry reading group where we’ll share and discuss poems written in the 20th and 21st centuries in a relaxed and inclusive peer-led environment. \n  \nQuestions we’ll be asking include: \n  \nWhat makes a poem ‘work’?  \nWhy do we like a poem? Why don’t we?  \nIs there such a thing as a fashionable poem? Does it matter?  \nCan we love a poem we don’t fully understand? What makes mystery different to obscurity?  \nWhat might we learn from other poets that can help us enrich our own craft?  \n  \nThe Reading Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month\, 2pm-4pm in The Community Works. \n  \nWe suggest a donation to attend each session: £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more) and registration is required here. Donations are optional and shouldn’t be prohibitive to you attending\, but all proceeds go to the running costs of the Oxford Poetry Library and our ability to continue providing these sorts of sessions. \n  \nFacilitated by the established writers and prolific readers Alan Buckley and Vanessa Lampert \n  \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand.

SUMMARY:LIT Reading Group: Poetry Salon at the Old Fire Station
DESCRIPTION:Dig out your favourite notebook and your most trusted ink pen: on 1st July\, it’s poetry night at the Old Fire Station! \nSession theme: Poetry Salon \nSalon noun \n– a gathering space for creative folk \nInspired by the OPEN Salon-style exhibition currently on at the OFS\, we will be using ‘salons’ and their ethos as a jumping off point. \nUsing the gallery as our creative inspiration\, we will look at the history of ‘salons’\, play some writing games\, create poetry and share our work. \nAll levels of writing experience are welcome. \nAbout LIT: \n  \nLIT is a reading and writing group for cis and trans women\, trans men\, non-binary people\, and people of other marginalised genders to share their own work and the work of others. We meet online every third Monday of the month\, and host one-off in person events and collaborations. \nFor more information about us\, you can read our statement of aims and values here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/223789834941256 or email francesca_moll@hotmail.co.uk  to request to join our WhatsApp group.

\nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer is Ed Roffe! Ed is a pseudo-Welsh poet who often writes about the things that exist between other things. His poems have been featured by the likes of the Rialto\, Lighthouse\, Atrium and Osmosis Press\, and appear in anthologies including ‘Under Your Pillow’ (Victorina Press). He moved to Oxford in order to study for an MA in Creative Writing at Oxford Brookes University\, and has continued to live and write in the city of dreaming spires while working at the city’s other university. \n\nThe theme for the evening is LOVE (IS EMBARRASSING). We want your cringe. We want your soppy gross outpourings. Romantic or otherwise. Brace yourselves. \n\nThe session starts at 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive at 7pm – the list fills up quick)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU).

Please book your tickets here: https://tinyurl.com/theshapeofpoetry \nNote that the sessions on 13 July\, 12 October\, and 14 December will happen online – links to the Zoom session will be circulated to attendees in advance of these events. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements.

\n  \nThe Reading Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month\, 2-4 pm in The Community Works.

SUMMARY:From Page to Stage: Acting Techniques in Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Page to Stage is a series of 5 workshops designed to help writers or aspiring writers take their poetry off the page and onto the stage using a variety of performance skills and confidence-boosting activities. Each session will be run by a different trained performer who will focus on the key elements you’ll need to take your performance to the next level. \nSessions will take place at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, Oxford\, OX1 1HU)\, at 1pm-3.30pm on the last Saturday of the month from April – August. Participants must book each session individually and are invited to book for all five sessions\, or just the one or ones which are of interest to them. \nAfter the workshop series has ended\, all participants will have the chance to show off their finely honed performance skills and perform alongside the workshop leaders in our September showcase event! Further details and dates to follow. \nTickets are sold on three tiers\, based on means: £10 is the general admission price\, with a £15 tickets for those wishing to pay a bit more\, but there are a limited numbers of tickets sold for £5 for those on a lower income. We emphasize that there are a limited number of these lower-cost tickets\, so please only register for this lower-cost option if you need it. There is also one free ticket per session available for anyone who would benefit from these sessions\, but for whom the ticket price is prohibitive. Please email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com if you would like to request this free ticket. \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand. \n  \nThe theme for this session is… \nActing Techniques in Poetry with Gommie \nA relaxed\, non judgemental environment where you are invited to discover a deeper connection with your own text and a richer relationship with your audience through methods founded by legendary theatre practitioners such as Stanislavski\, Sanford Meisner\, Rudolf Laban and David Mamet. \n“Don’t get better\, go deeper” \nThe key phrase for this session will be “action” or want in poetry. In this workshop Gommie will give a brief introduction to Stanislavski’s method and then perform two contrasting poems for the group. We will discuss how he implements Stanislavski’s technique\, breaking the poem down into units and transitive verbs. Gommie will then invite the students to perform\, offering one-on-one coaching. \nThis will very much function as an acting coaching session so I ask poets to bring work they wish to develop and put in-front of an audience: the more ambitious the better. This is a safe space for poets and performers to work on material they wish to take to the next level. \nGommie is a performance artist who uses poetry as a vehicle to express himself. He trained for three years at The Drama Centre London before working as an actor for ten years\, performing with the Royal Exchange Theatre\, The National Theatre and The BBC. He then moved into the visual arts and performance art working with prestigious galleries such as Bohnams\, Hauser and Wirth and Messums. \n

Just bring a willingness to receive and provide feedback with the whole group! \nOnce a month\, we invite a published poet to join us. There will be a short reading of their poems followed by a workshop where attendees can learn more about the creative process\, get an insight into what it means to be a poet\, and share our work with them. \nThis month’s poet is Brennig Davies. Brennig is a writer from South Wales. He was the winner of the inaugural BBC Young Writers Award\, and his work has appeared in The London Magazine\, Poetry Wales\, Litro USA\, and on BBC Radio 4. In 2023 he was one of the Hay Festival’s Writers at Work. \nFeel free to email any queries to opldraftingtable@gmail.com

\n\nThe theme for the evening is PORTALS AND PARALLELS. Poetry can be a gateway to another world. We want your alternative dimensions\, your parallel universes – give us just a peek behind the curtain! \n\nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage will be Rawz. Rawz is a multidisciplinary artist\, poet\, musician and MC from Oxford. His practice centres around words and music\, and is rooted in social justice and the exploration and understanding of our interconnected worlds. Portals and Parallels is the title of his upcoming theatre show which he’ll be bringing to the Old Fire Station as part of Offbeat Festival in September. You can find more info about Rawz here https://linktr.ee/rawz_official \nThe session starts at 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free. \nThere will be a bar at this event\, so it is no longer BYOB! \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand!

SUMMARY:The Shape of Poetry workshop
DESCRIPTION:Note that until further notice\, these sessions will happen online – links to the Zoom session will be circulated to those who have registered in advance of these events. \nMany of us feel intimidated by formal poetry: Some of us consider it too restrictive and governed by rules\, while others write exclusively in form. This workshop is an invitation to all writers of poetry\, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years\, to explore the creative potential of poetic forms. \nOur monthly sessions happen on the second Saturday of the month from 2pm til 4pm online.
