SUMMARY:Postbox Poetry
DESCRIPTION:In a world of flooding inboxes\, instant messages and video calls\, nothing compares to the feeling of writing a letter. Unlike the immediacy of emails or calls\, with letters\, one reflects on what they want to say to someone and takes the time to share their thoughts and experiences with them. \n  \nFrom March to August 2024\, the Oxford Poetry Library is running the Letterbox Poetry workshop series on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 11 to 12.30 PM UK time (4.30 to 6 PM India time). \n  \nThe workshop will explore the process of writing letters as a way to create poems. It will encourage participants to write about places\, people\, ideas and objects using letters as a medium of expression. The workshop is for readers of poetry\, people who share a love for letters\, beginners and experienced writers and anyone else in between or beyond. \n  \nDuring the workshop\, participants will find how they can use the letter writing process to build their own narratives and understand themselves and those around them a little better. They will work on writing prompts\, read famous epistolary poems and excerpts from epistolary novels and have the option to be paired with another participant to have a mini letter-writing exchange through the course of the workshop! \nFor those interested in presenting their poems to a wider audience can take part in the Workshop Showcase in which a few handpicked poems will be spotlighted on the Oxford Poetry Library’s social media pages. \nThe sessions are suitable for anyone over the age of 16. While each session will cover different writing themes and activities\, one could enrol for all six sessions or any session or sessions they prefer. Each session is priced at £5\, and participants also have the option to opt from a sliding ticket price range of £2-£10 based on their means. \n  \nPlease email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com if you have any questions about the workshop series. \n  \nAbout the facilitator: Prarthana Banikya is a poet and editor with over 12 years of experience in the learning design industry. Her writings\, photographs and other work have appeared in Scroll\, Homegrown\, Mid-Day\, Architectural Digest\, Asia Writes\, Feminism India\, Namnai and Stories of the Nature of Cities\, among others. She is the recipient of the 2018 Orange Flower Award for poetry and the founder and editor of The Little Journal of Northeast India. She has most recently conducted the Stillness in Words poetry workshop for the Oxford Poetry Library.

SUMMARY:From Page to Stage: Comedy in Performance
DESCRIPTION:Page to Stage is a series of 5 workshops designed to help writers or aspiring writers take their poetry off the page and onto the stage using a variety of performance skills and confidence-boosting activities. Each session will be run by a different trained performer who will focus on the key elements you’ll need to take your performance to the next level. \nSessions will take place at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, Oxford\, OX1 1HU)\, at 1pm-3.30pm on the last Saturday of the month from April – August. Participants must book each session individually and are invited to book for all five sessions\, or just the one or ones which are of interest to them. \nAfter the workshop series has ended\, all participants will have the chance to show off their finely honed performance skills and perform alongside the workshop leaders in our September showcase event! Further details and dates to follow. \nRegistration is required and tickets can be booked here. Tickets are sold on three tiers\, based on means: £10 is the general admission price\, with a £15 tickets for those wishing to pay a bit more\, but there are a limited numbers of tickets sold for £5 for those on a lower income. We emphasize that there are a limited number of these lower-cost tickets\, so please only register for this lower-cost option if you need it. There is also one free ticket per session available for anyone who would benefit from these sessions\, but for whom the ticket price is prohibitive. Please email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com if you would like to request this free ticket. \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand. \nThe theme of this session is: \nComedy in Performance with Tina Sederholm \nYou might not believe it but\, everyone is funny and funny stuff is happening all around us all the time that we can utilize. Humour is a serious business\, because finding the humour in a situation is how we survive even the worst set of circumstances. \nIn this workshop\, you will find your own particular brand of ‘funny’\, and how you can use it either your own poetry\, or in links or as an improvisation technique on stage. We will touch on various different ways to trigger each participant’s ability to find humour\, including improvisation exercises (to build confidence on stage)\, how to connect to self\, and therefore engender audience connection\, and a short exploration of physical comedy and satire. Ideally\, poets will bring pieces they have already written\, but I will also include a short writing time\, to come up with an 8-12 line poem which can then be used as a practice piece for each of the different comedic elements. \nBy the end of the session\, each participant will leave with a greater sense of their particular way ofbeing funny and with tools to increase their ability to use that humour on stage. \nTina Sederholm is a performance poet and theatre maker. Veteran of seven Edinburgh Fringes\, and creator of five solo shows\, including Till Debt Us Do Part and Everything Wrong With You Is Beautiful\, she has performed everywhere from the Royal Albert Hall to an aquarium. Her latest show is called Everything’s Working Out Poetically and will debut at Fringe Theatrefest this summer.

SUMMARY:TASTE Poetry Competition: Prize-giving event
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library has been collaborating with The Oxford Hub on our very first poetry competition\, and at this special event\, we will be hearing from the shortlisted poets and announcing the winners! \nThis OPL poetry competition in association with the Oxford Hub was a clarion call to all new and experienced poets to make their voices heard. Building on the phenomenal success of OPL’s monthly open mic sessions (This is just to say…) and its many workshops and events\, we wanted to extend our poetry welcome within and beyond the city boundaries\, beyond artificial town and gown limits\, beyond all physical and psychological obstacles no less! We aim to bring together all those passionate about poems in a bid to highlight the many talented but possibly under-celebrated poets we know are out there. And for those who just like to read and listen to poetry\, we will provide a feast of entertainment by sharing new work on the sensory theme of TASTE. \nWithout reading poetry and learning from others who have gone before\, it’s difficult to write poems\, let alone improve on them. OPL helps to start a poetry conversation by drawing in readers and listeners\, who may well go on to be writers themselves. With the support of students from the Oxford Hub and OPL volunteers\, we aim to make the first OPL poetry competition a poetic feast for all and bolster the fortunes of the library so that it can continue to reach out to poets and poetry readers or listeners\, whatever stage they are at in realising their aims. \nAt this special event\, we will invite our shortlisted poets to read their entries\, and will announce the winner of the competition. We will also hear from our three illustrious judges: Vanessa Lampert and Alan Buckley\, and Jenny Lewis. \nAll shortlisted entrants will have free entry\, otherwise tickets are £5 and can be purchased in advance here. \nYou can read all about the judges and the competition itself here. \n

SUMMARY:"Wow\, what happened to me there?": A Workshop Day
DESCRIPTION:Join poets Vanessa Lampert and Alan Buckley for a full workshop day on poetry and the art of surprise. \nThe title of this workshop (a quote from the Irish poet Paul Muldoon) reflects how we feel as readers when a poem startles us\, and helps us see some part of the world – or ourselves – in a new way. In this all-day workshop we’ll be looking at a range of contemporary poems\, to see how close attention to everyday experience can generate poems that move us out of the ordinary\, and which demand to be re-read. We’ll explore how familiar language\, and a willingness to be playful\, can take us to places of deep feeling and mystery. Participants will have lots of time to write and share their own responses to the poems being presented. This day will be suitable for anyone wanting to develop their own work\, although we recommend that writers already have some experience of showing their work to other people. \nThe workshop will take place on Saturday 11th May\, 2024  from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm at The Community Works. The event is intended to be a fundraiser for the library\, to support its extensive programme of free and low-cost events\, and everyone involved in making it happen is giving their time free of charge.
\n  \nFrom March to August 2024\, the Oxford Poetry Library is running the Letterbox Poetry workshop series on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 11 to 12.30 PM UK time (3.30 to 5 PM India time).

SUMMARY:The Reading Circle
DESCRIPTION:People who never read poetry don’t write poems that are worth reading – Wendy Cope \n  \nIf you’re keen to find a way in to reading and appreciating poetry\, discover new writing\, and open your mind to the world of poetry\, welcome to The Reading Circle. \n  \nCome to OPL’s poetry reading group where we’ll share and discuss poems written in the 20th and 21st centuries in a relaxed and inclusive peer-led environment. \n  \nQuestions we’ll be asking include: \n  \nWhat makes a poem ‘work’?  \nWhy do we like a poem? Why don’t we?  \nIs there such a thing as a fashionable poem? Does it matter?  \nCan we love a poem we don’t fully understand? What makes mystery different to obscurity?  \nWhat might we learn from other poets that can help us enrich our own craft?  \n  \nThe Reading Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month\, 2-4 pm in The Community Works. \n  \nWe suggest a donation to attend each session: £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more) and registration is required here. Donations are optional and shouldn’t be prohibitive to you attending\, but all proceeds go to the running costs of the Oxford Poetry Library and our ability to continue providing these sorts of sessions. \n  \nFacilitated by the established writers and prolific readers Alan Buckley and Vanessa Lampert \n  \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand.

Like a pilot\, you are taking them on a journey with you. In this workshop you will learn how to captain this journey skillfully and safely. Lorna will help you incorporate a variety of techniques used by trained storytellers to bring your performance poetry to life on stage. \nWe’ll cover how to begin and end your performance with confidence\, use the senses in your work; explore and perform different characters; use ‘the 4 elements’ in your voice and language to vary mood and tone; use silence\, pace and stress to create variety and strengthen imagery. There will also be time for you to get on our stage for some ‘live coaching’ and feedback on the techniques we have learned. \nPlease bring a poem of your own to perform if you have one\, but one will be provided if you don’t. \nLorna Burchell is a trained storyteller\, performance poet and Oxford-based aspiring comedian who has graced stages both locally and afar. Her work combines her love of the narrative arts with the playfulness and rhythm of spoken word. She has trained at the International School of Storytelling in East Sussex and with various talented mentors along the way.

SUMMARY:This Is Just to Say: spoken word open mic
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Poetry Library presents a spoken word open mic night! Join us in the library on the first Tuesday of every month to enjoy all manner of word-weaving\, story-sharing\, and spell-casting. \nWe welcome poets\, storytellers\, and writers of all kinds to share their work (or the work of others) in a safe\, supportive\, and inclusive space. Slots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! \nThis month’s theme is GAINS AND LOSSES. You win some\, you lose some – but writing can also be about what you collect and what you let go – we want to hear about your ebb and flow! \nEvery month we feature a performer with a slightly extended set and this month’s featured performer to grace our stage is Issabella Orlando. Issabella is a filmmaker\, artist and writer-turned-poet. She is fascinated by life\, loss\, the creative process\, what we do with our past\, and how we shape our future. Her creative practise is the simple act of collecting images\, stories\, and inspirations while moving through the world\, all of which are then reflected in her poetry\, films and series of poem-print-collages\, The Lilies. She’s currently working on an upcoming film\, writing poems with OPL and sharing them on her Substack archaeology for poets. \nOur next session will happen on June 4th 7.30pm (performers are advised to arrive from 7pm)\, at The Community Works (21 Park End St\, OX1 1HU). \n£5 entry (£2 concessions)\, performers free. Cash only! \nThere will be a bar at this event\, so it is no longer BYOB! \nThe building is accessible\, but if you have any specific access needs\, please drop us an email at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com beforehand!

SUMMARY:The Shape of Poetry workshop
DESCRIPTION:Many of us feel intimidated by formal poetry: Some of us consider it too restrictive and governed by rules\, while others write exclusively in form. This workshop is an invitation to all writers of poetry\, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years\, to explore the creative potential of poetic forms. \nOur monthly sessions happen on the second Saturday of the month from 2pm til 4pm in The Community Works. During each of our workshops\, we will look at the conventions of a particular form such as the sonnet\, ghazal\, or haiku\, read example poems\, and write our own versions. This workshop will be a collaborative space for us to explore how experimenting with limitations or restrictions in our writing can give us whole new ways of expressing ourselves\, and open unexpected doors! Whether you’ve never written a poem before\, have just started to write\, or aren’t sure if what you’re writing is poetry\, this monthly workshop is a chance to carve out some time for writing. \nIn each workshop\, we’ll read a poem together\, and use it as our starting point. We’ll suggest some prompts you could take from the poem\, and ideas you might like to borrow. There will be plenty of time to write\, and plenty more prompts if you get stuck. At the end of the session\, you’ll be able to share what you’ve written in a supportive environment. \nAll you need to bring is yourself – these workshops are here for you to enjoy writing and build confidence in your voice. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. \nTickets are priced at £5 for general admission (£10 for those able to donate a bit more\, £2 for those on lower income) and registration is required. If this cost would be prohibitive to your attending\, please email us at oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com and we can allocate you one of our limited free spots in the workshop. Please book your tickets here: https://tinyurl.com/theshapeofpoetry \nNote that the sessions on 8 June\, 13 July\, 12 October\, and 14 December will happen online – links to the Zoom session will be circulated to attendees in advance of these events. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements.
\n  \nThe Reading Circle meets on the third Saturday of each month\, 2pm-4pm in The Community Works.
