Alan Buckley is a poet\, editor\, and poetry tutor. He was brought up on Merseyside\, and now lives in Oxford. He is the author of two pamphlets – Shiver (2009) and The Long Haul (2016) – and his first full collection\, Touched\, was published by HappenStance in 2020. His work has been highly commended in the Forward and Bridport prizes. For many years he ran events locally featuring both poetry and music\, and is one of the stand-in hosts for Oxford’s Catweazle Club\, which he has performed at regularly since 2004. He was a founding editor of the award-winning pamphlet publisher ignitionpress (based at Oxford Brookes). He co-ran a live literature project at HMP Grendon from 2006 to 2007\, and between 2011 and 2019 was a First Story Writer-in-Residence at several schools in Oxfordshire.\nSlots are 5 minutes long\, and performers sign up on the door – first come\, first served! It can help us make sense of our experiences and find new and helpful ways of seeing things. \nFrom January to June 2023 Oxford Poetry Library will be running creative writing for well-being workshops on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 1.30 to 3pm. \nThe workshops will offer time and space to enjoy creative and expressive writing in a safe\, relaxed and supportive setting. There will be an engaging theme for each workshop\, and we’ll use a variety of writing exercises and prompts to help words flow. \nThe workshops will be facilitated by Mary Mountford\, one of the volunteer librarians at Oxford Poetry Library. Mary is currently studying for a master’s degree in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes. She is also a Registered Nurse and works at Maggie’s Centre in Oxford where she runs a creative writing for well-being group and other supportive groups for people with cancer. She says\, “I’ve used writing most of my life to help me think things through and express my thoughts and feelings. I enjoy writing alone and in groups. It’s a great way to learn about myself and to connect with other people.” \nThese workshops are suitable for anyone over the age of 16 and no previous experience of creative writing is needed. \nThe workshops are free. Since that time each card has also accumulated meanings. By the 18th century the tarot was used for divination or for oracular purposes\, much like the Delphic oracles of old. Nowadays the trumps\, or major arcana\, are believed to chronicle\, symbologically\, the journey of the Fool through life. \nHow to be a Tarot Card (or a Teenager) explores\, exploits\, and sometimes downright twists the major arcana and the meanings they have accumulated\, in the order in which the many hundreds of tarot decks now travelling the world present them. The Star\, connoting hope\, exists simultaneously as metaphor and feral dog; the rebirth nestled inside the Death card becomes female friendship and escape from patriarchal binds. \nTo revise means to re-see. JC Niala is an award winning playwright\, nature writer and poet. Her artists’ journal of poems Portal: 1918 Allotment details the year in which she recreated an allotment in the style of the year 1918. And develop how to welcome readers into poems where dark subjects are handled\, with humour and a light touch. \nAbout Vanessa:  \nVanessa Lampert is an acupuncturist and poet from Oxfordshire. She has an MA in writing poetry from Newcastle University and Poetry School London. Since 2019 she has won the Café Writers prize\, the Edward Thomas prize\, the Sentinel prize and the Ver Poetry prize twice and come second in the Fish\, Yeovil\, Oxford Brookes\, Ware\, and Kent & Sussex prizes. She has been placed in many others including a commendation in the National Poetry Competition 2020 for which she was also listed in 2021. \nVanessa’s work has been widely published\, most recently been in Magma\, The Moth\, The Oxford Times and Poetry Wales. She co-edits The Alchemy Spoon magazine and teaches children for Learn with Leaders in India. She has run workshops for Hive South Yorkshire\, Poetry School London\, Stanza groups countrywide and Aldeburgh Poetry Festival. Makar retains the identity of creative practical activity and art from which our ‘poetry’ stems: the Ancient Greek poieō meant to make and to compose poetry. If poets are makers\, then translators of poetry are doubly-so.\n\n\nMakaris at the Meadow will be the launch of the From Apples to Oranges poetry zine and an evening of multilingual poetry reading. Orlando was force-fed ‘The Lady of Shalott’ by their mother as a child and as such vowed to avoid poetry for the rest of their life. As with their other resolutions\, Orlando failed and finally picked up the mic in the summer of 2017 in a whirlwind of peer pressure and wine. Over the last few years Orlando has featured in the London poetry scene for events such as the Farrago Poetry Slam\, Speak Equal\, and Big Trouble. In 2018\, just 5 months after approaching the stage\, they earned 8th place in Canada’s National Poetry Slam\, and in February of last year they achieved 3rd place in the UK National Poetry Slam\, one-up on the 4th place of the year before. Orlando speaks with passion and ease born of a deep love of words\, captivating and moving audiences in the most exquisitely powerful way: a must-see if you are into the spoken word. \nAll very welcome to just come and listen.
