SUMMARY:The Shape of Poetry workshop
DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from last year\, we bring The Shape of Poetry back for one day only! Join us for this free workshop all about poetic form! \nMany of us feel intimidated by formal poetry: Some of us consider it too restrictive and governed by rules\, while others write exclusively in form. This workshop is an invitation to all writers of poetry\, whether you’re just starting out or have been writing for years\, to explore the creative potential of poetic forms. \nThis session will take place from 1pm til 2.30pm in The Community Works. During each of our workshops\, we will look at the conventions of a particular form such as the sonnet\, ghazal\, or haiku\, read example poems\, and write our own versions. This workshop will be a collaborative space for us to explore how experimenting with limitations or restrictions in our writing can give us whole new ways of expressing ourselves\, and open unexpected doors! \nAll you need to bring is yourself – pens and paper will be supplied. The workshop is open to anyone aged 16+. Attendance is free\, but please do register to let us know you’re coming here. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Finding the Words: Creative Writing for Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:Doing something creative and expressive is great for our sense of well-being\, and creative writing is a wonderful way to express ourselves. It can help us make sense of our experiences and find new and helpful ways of seeing things. \nFrom January to June 2023 Oxford Poetry Library will be running creative writing for well-being workshops on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 1.30 to 3pm. \nThe workshops will offer time and space to enjoy creative and expressive writing in a safe\, relaxed and supportive setting. There will be an engaging theme for each workshop\, and we’ll use a variety of writing exercises and prompts to help words flow. \nThe workshops will be facilitated by Mary Mountford\, one of the volunteer librarians at Oxford Poetry Library. Mary is currently studying for a master’s degree in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes. She is also a Registered Nurse and works at Maggie’s Centre in Oxford where she runs a creative writing for well-being group and other supportive groups for people with cancer. She says\, “I’ve used writing most of my life to help me think things through and express my thoughts and feelings. I enjoy writing alone and in groups. It’s a great way to learn about myself and to connect with other people.” \nThese workshops are suitable for anyone over the age of 16 and no previous experience of creative writing is needed. \nThe workshops are free. Pens\, pencils and paper will be provided but please feel free to bring your own notebook if you wish. \nWe have space for 15 people to participate so please check availability and book a free ticket here. \nYou’ll be very welcome to come and discover the joys and benefits of writing. We all have a story to tell. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible and inclusive space\, but do email us in advance if you have any specific needs on oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com. SUMMARY:Griot's Well Writers: Workshop on Collage and Poetry
DESCRIPTION:The Oxford Poetry Library are proud to welcome the Griot’s Well writers to inspire our city. This group of award-winning writers have been selected for the Writerz & Scribez development programme for Black and ethnically diverse writers over the age of 25. \nThis workshop will focus on how to use collage to find poetic inspiration\, and will be run by Gayathiri Kamalakanthan\, a Tamil writer who specialises in queering and collage with poetry. They are interested in how language shapes our realities from childhood\, and how we can use language to queer our future possibilities. \nWe have 20 places available so please tell us you’re coming by booking your ticket HERE. \nAll ages are welcome from 13+ and no previous experience of collage or poetry is required. All materials will be provided\, and participants are invited to stay afterwards for free pizza and refreshments. \nThis is because from 6pm-8pm\, the Griots Well writers will be showcasing the work\, and we would love to also invite participants from the workshop to share what they created at the start of this event. If you can stay\, you can just let us know on the day what you’d like to eat. \nThe Oxford Poetry Library is an accessible and inclusive space\, but please contact us in advance if you have any access needs on oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com. \nIf you have any other questions then please email us on oxfordpoetrylibrary@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Writing New Histories of Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Oxford is a city rich in histories beyond the university. These histories are often part of the present\, and of our everyday lives. \nThis free writing workshop is aimed at residents of Oxford who wish to put into words and images their experiences and memories of the city.  \nWe will explore local and individual memories of everyday life in Oxford\, and will encourage participants to share their own experiences\, with a view to including them in a book that celebrates Oxford’s communities\, and using extracts of the workshop writing in exhibition panels at the Museum of Oxford. No previous experience of writing is required – just be willing to share your memories and experiences\, and be ready to give writing a go. \nThis is a TORCH initiative in partnership with the Museum of Oxford and Oxford Poetry Library\, and workshops will be facilitated by Patrick McGuinness\, poet and writer\, and author of Real Oxford\, a book about the city beyond the dreaming spires. \nNo need to book – drop in from 2pm to 4pm to join in! \nOxford Poetry Library is an accessible space but please do contact us in advance if you have specific requirements. You can email us about this or with any questions about the workshop at oxfordpoetrylibary@gmail.com
